We have DSL networked through a router. When my husband is downloading stuff, my surfing is painfully slow. For the short time I'm online, I just unplug the ethernet cords. However, I am concerned about the wear and tear on the plugs. Is there such a thing as an on/off switch for the cord?

No, there is no on/off switch, but dont worry about the wear on the connectors, they last forever, however, I recommend using another method such as disable the network card on your husband's computer, this will stop the download and wont harm your router's ethernet ports.

You can't get "on-line" if you disconnect the cord so I'm not sure what you're trying to do.

There is no "on/off" switch for network connections although you can disable a network connection of you want to without pulling the plug. Go into Network Connections, right click on the connection and select "Disable" from the context menu.

You won't wear out the cable by disconnecting and reconnecting it repeatedly, any more than you'd wear out the plug on your vacuum cleaner by plugging it into a wall outlet and disconnecting it when you are done with it.

yes it is a software based control. simply disable the ethernet port on the computer you wish to disconect from the network.
in windows click on My network place, network connections. now right click on the network connection and then click disable. you are then in stand alone (no LAN or WAN network access) mode.
to reactivate the connection all you do is repeat the steps to disable except this time you click enable your connection will be back up in a matter of a few seconds to a minute depending on the speed of your computer.
