I'm writing a book and this is something I need to know.

Is there a certain disease that is very common in Palominos that they could die from? If so, is it possible for, say, 5 palominos on one farm to get it at once? Can you give me a link to a site that explains it more?

No stupid answers please!

Paints ARE a breed in the U.S.

AND YES I KNOW PALOMINOS AREN"T A BREED! I NEVER SAID THEY WERE!

Chances are, the fact that the horses are Palominos have nothing to do with the problem. Palomino is merely a term to describe a particular color of horse. Here's a link to a veterinary reference on contagious diseases of horses. http://www1.brcc.edu/vettech/eqdis.htm
Also it is possible for horses to die from intestinal worms if they aren't regularly dewormed and thats another possible cause.

Another possibility is a toxic plant in the pasture that the horses all have eaten. Here is a link to a pdf file on plants that are toxic to horses and livestock. www.spokanecounty.org/weedboard/pdf/2004ToxicPlants.pdf

I showed palominos for many years and never had any develop any problems that were specific to them only. I think what you might be thinking about is the problems that gray horses have with developing cancer (melanomas) A melanoma is a cancer that develops in the melanin cells of the skin. Melanin, the pigment that makes some skin darker than others, is abundant in the skin of gray horses. While horses of other colors can develop melanomas, grays are especially vulnerable. Paint horses are also at risk of developing the same thing, especially if they have white areas around the eyes. A lot of people tattoo around the eye if it does not have a natural "black eyeliner", to help prevent this. But this is not a disorder that would spread from one horse to another by contact. Hope this helps! Good Luck with your book! This is the link to the webpage on melanoma. http://www.horses-and-horse-information.com/articles/0701melanoma.shtml

Palomino's are not a breed, any more than the paint is a breed of horse.

In some areas, especially in the US, Palomino's can be classed as a breed unto themselves, as can Paints. But genetically speaking, they're quite diverse in most cases because theyre a color and not a breed.

Aside from the redular ailments associated with horses these 'breeds' dont tend to have problems unto themselves.

The only thing I can think of is their tendancy to burn in the sun, because they have so little pigmentation in their skin, especially on their noses.

Also, in places like the US where close families of horses are bred together because of the liklihood of certain horses throwing palomino foals, you can end up with genetic issues and weaknesses due to a shallow gene pool.

Its something to look into. Iam sure there are veterninary studies into something like that.

Acording to Wikipedia, a Palominos are not an exact breed. It is a color breed. It does not explain much but try 'Palomino horse' at wikipedia.com.

Palomino is not a breed, it's a color. So, they're probably not more susceptible to certain diseases than any other horse.

Paolmino is a coat colour, not a breed, so I can see no connection between them. That's like saying black cats are more likely to get a disease than orange cats.
