If you have a boot floppy you can type format at the c:/ prompt and it will format the drive. I would suggest getting an application that will allow you to format at boot. Disk Director Suite is one I use but there are many available. Partition Commander is another. Alternatively, the manufacturer of your hard drive probably has a utility that will format and set up the drive to factory default. However if you are selling the computer, I would suggest using a program such as Eraser as it allows you to create a Boot & Nuke* disk that will eraser the data a number of times.

If data on your hard disk is corrupted it is advisable to format the hard disk and reinstall the operating system (usually Windows XP). If a new hard disk is used, you may prefer to partition the hard disk into 2 or more drive. The operating system is installed on the first drive and a backup of the data is stored on the second drive More details at http://fixit.in/format.html

Your choice is to BUY a Windows CD. But here is your alternative.

- Use Windows Explorer to delete everything that you want out of the My Documents folder.
- If you used accounting software, then go to the ADD/REMOVE programs section of the Control Panel, and uninstall that. Then go into your Program Files section, and delete any remnants.
- Open MY COMPUTER and right click on your C drive. Pick TOOLS, then use CHECK NOW. Select both tests and restart and let it run this full test.
- Use Disk Cleanup in the System Tools section of your Programs, under the Accessories section
- Use DEFRAG

The possibility of remnant files on your Windows computer are unlikely, but with the Check Disk and Defrag, your drive will be pretty clean.

I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

When the computer starts up, start tspping the F8 key.

Eventually, a menu will come up. Boot into MS-DOS or Command Prompt.

To completely wipe the hard drive, type FORMAT C: /S

This will destroy every flipping thing on your computer.
