One rejoinder, your question makes no sense w/o context. Teams now play 82 whereas they used to play 78 even 84 at one time. It's like comparing apples and oranges. Better is winning pct. (not that the regular season means anything really as it's the Cup that counts).

The real top ten from 70/1 onwards
1. Habs 76/7 .825 60 wins
2. Habs 77/8 .806 59
3. Dead Things 95/6 .799 62 wins (swept in the Final by Trap Jersey)
4. Habs 75/6 .794 58
5. Bruins 70/1 .776 57 (curse you, Ken Dryden!)
6. Habs 72/3 .769 52
7. Bruins 71/2 .763 54
8. Dead Things 05/06 .756 58 (meet Roloson and Oilers...1st rd and out)
9. Oilers 83/4 .744 57
10. Oilers 85/6 .744 56 (Steve Smith own goal...bye bye)
