Get an actron 9175. These are great readers. I just got one for christmas and I already have used it a ton. It is available at autozone, but they dont have it on their site yet because it is the newest model. It retails for about $130, which is a great price. My father has a snap-on that retails for $6000!!

AutoTap makes the most complete computer diagnostics and it's affordable.$200 and you supply the computer or laptop. It diagnoses all sensors while operating and gives all trouble codes and turns off the lite.It is CAN compliant. CAN is Controller Area Network. That probably doesn't mean much to you but be sure that any scan tool you buy is CAN or CAN bus compliant. The 2007cars and probably some a little earlier will have CAN along with OBD II. CAN is the new emissions test that will be done instead of a tailpipetest test. It uses the computer for OBD II to do the entire test.

none, if you want to see the data and readings of each sensor then your going to start at $1500.00 and go up quickly, but to just get the codes and a short description of the codes the actron scan tools at advanced auto and autozone are nice because they are generic which makes code retrieval faster than having to enter all of the vehicles information first, there are some web sites that offer software for your laptop computer that will let you see a lot but most of it is for 1 or 2 types of vehicles only, so you cant scan anybodies car, plus it will set you back around 300.00 or so but you get full access to reading sensors and switch's etc
also i have never tried the software for laptops so i cant say it would be safe or not its a at your own risk thing.
