My monitor displays everything way too dark, but the knobs on the side that control the brightness and the contrast are turned all the way up, how can I brighten the display?

If it has knobs, it must be ancient. You can clean the pots, but it won't be like new and it will go bad soon again. Time to spring for a new monitor.

May need to change the fuse in the monitor. If that doesn't work or you don't know how to do that you may need to get another one. If you don't know anything about the monitor then you shouldn't try changing it because even after its unplugged for a while theres enough voltage left in it to kill a person. Good luck! :)
