What program do you use to read emails? Yahoo Mail, Hotmail or Outlook?

If I knew I could explain step by step, but I'll give the general answer. The IP# of the person sending the email, as well as his ISP's email server, is contained in the Header of the email.

If using Yahoo Mail, go inside and read the message as you normally do. Then on the bottom right of the email is a link that says Full Headers. Click that.

Heres how an email from my Dad reads:

from 65.17.128.9 (EHLO lists.wcoil.com) (65.17.128.9) by mta429.mail.mud.yahoo.com with SMTP; Sun, 31 Dec 2006 00:11:48 -0800

from [192.168.1.5] (dhcp-65.17.123.456.dsl.wcoilexpress.com [65.17.123.456]) by lists.wcoil.com (Postfix) with ESMTP id 8976D8C1BD for ; Sun, 31 Dec 2006 03:11:47 -0500 (EST)

The first line (65.17.128.9) is his ISP's SMTP (outgoing email) server. You can tell this because most SMTP's server say EHLO when they make a connection to another email server (ie yahoo).

The 2nd line: dhcp-65.17.123.456.dsl.wcoilexpress.com [65.17.456.123] is HIS COMPUTER's actual IP# (I did change the last few numbers for privacy).

If you're using Outlook Express then simply right click on a message, in your inbox, and choose Properties. Then click the Details tab. It will now show you the Headers. You can optionally click the Message Source button which will show even more details.

On Outlook express, you should see a line: X-Originating-IP: [216.123.456.789] that will show the senders IP#.

Now to do some detective work. Go to http://dnsstuff.com and type in the IP# in either/both Reverse DNS Lookup and IP Information. That will tell you the hostname of the IP# and give you an idea of his ISP. Mine shows something like this for my IP#
cpe-24-93-123-456.columbus.res.rr.com . This tells you I'm using rr.com (Road Runner) in Columbus. Most hostnames won't be quite so informative, but worth looking at.

And finally, as the person above states, the IP# is the IP# he was using at the time. So you want to record not only the IP#, but the time of the email. If he is using a dialup or DSL connection, then his IP# will change (called dynamic ip) everytime he logs on. So in order to Bust Him, you need to make sure you have the IP# and the time of the email. The ISP will have a log of what username was using what IP# at what time. A person can log on to the internet (that uses the same ISP), after he logs off and can very likely get the same IP# and so forth. If he's using something like Road Runner (cable internet) then the IP# never changes unless you unplug the cable modem, so that would be easier and more reliable.

The IP address is sometimes listed when displaying the full header of an e/m. Most e/m programs have the option to display the full header. This is of course if he has a dedicated IP address.
