You do not need to (and probably should not) bring salt with you. However, sometimes it is nice to bring flowers, a bottle of wine or a dessert to someone's house when invited; but sometimes they might get insulted if you bring some sort of food - they may have already taken care of everything. Usually it is best just to ask if you can bring anything and they might tell you sure or no it's all taken care of.

Here it is considered bad luck if you knock over the salt, so then you grab a pinch in your right hand and throw it over your left shoulder. (or maybe it is left hand and right shoulder?) anyway it's just an old superstition.

It's polite to bring a dessert or a wine to share during the meal, maybe even a side dish. We don't have an emphasis on luck in the U.S., so what we bring to a meal we've been invited to is usually governed by reciprocity (we were graciously invited, so we feel compelled to contribute to the meal). No one I ever have ever known has brought table salt; that would require an explanation for most people.

The person providing the meal should provide the salt. People invited should bring a wine or a dessert. Bringing your own is just disturblingly weird.

That particular custom is not really followed much anymore.
It USED to be, back when salt was a precious commodity.
