don't do it! i have a fish, too and after i have read every on elses entries, i feel so sad. i would never do that to my fish. even i he suffered enough, let him die on his own. that way, you don't have to feel resposible. if u must kill him now, i would just feed him a lot of food and make him so full he dies. but try not to do it.

Don't flush him! If you do, he will be slowly poisoned.
Don't freeze him, either. Putting him in cold water so that he goes into "shock" is torture.
The best thing to do is to bring him to a vet that specializes in aquatics. They will overdose him with clove oil, which is an anesthetic. You can do this yourself, but do alot of research first.
Decapitation can be tricky, too. If it isn't done right, it can be very painful.
One way that balances humaneness with cheapness is to put him in a plastic bag and smack him as hard as you can against a hard surface, but this is kind of violent, and I could never do it personally, even though it was recommended by a breeder.
I would OD him with clove oil.

The simplest way is to put him in a container of water and put him in the freezer.
Alternatively you can use clove oil as sedative and then place him either in straight alcohol or into the freezer.
Finally an effective, but somewhat brutal method is to place him in a plastic bag and then bash it hard against a counter, etc. I know this sounds brutal but it is exceedingly fast and effective.

Use clove oil to make him unconscious, then add a cheap vodka to end it.
FREEZEING IS VERY CRUEL. Ecentialy what happens is there body tissues begin to tear apart as ice crystals begin to form.
Flushing is even worse. The fish dies by chokeing to death of sewage. How would you like to be drowned in sewage?
Cutting off his head, if done quickly, is also very quick and effective, but most people dont have the heart for it.

Get a bowl of the coldest water you can. Then dump a ton of ice into the bowl and let sit for about 10 minutes. Then take the fish and dump it into the bowl holding its head under water. They will instantly go into shock. They may move a bit but this is just reflexive spasms. I had to do this to my jack dempsy about 10 months ago. Very sad indeed. This is the second most humane thing to do, but the first is dropping it in a blender and I think that most of us do not want to do that. Also I have two oscars and enjoy them very much!

The only way generally accepted as human is to either use clove oil or to decapitate them.
Freezing is controversial, some say its humane, some sy it is very painful.
