What killed the pilot? Where did the monster go?

you don't know what killed the pilot...it's considered a "monster" but we never actually see it (later you see it as black smoke)...the others are people who were on the island before but you don't really know where they came from (still don't and we're in season 3)...a lot of it doesn't make sense but as the seasons go on, you learn more and more so you just gotta keep watching!...I guess they call it Lost for a reason haha ;)
