While driving through N.C.on rt.95, I passed an area with black smoke lingering in the air and it smelled horrible. I just about vomited from the stink. I was driving from FL to NY and back again.

It is the paper mill. If I am correct, it is right before you get into Virginia. I live in that area you are talking about so imagine how I feel (lol). Actually, I have gotten use to it.

The smell was either from a paper mill - which could explain the black smoke, or from a hog farm.

Either that or something the locals came up with to keep people from NY moving right on through.

My first thought was the smell of the tobacco industry, but it obviously isn't that. I'm not sure. I live in NC, but I haven't been as far east as I-95 in about 20 years. I can tell you that most of the state does not smell like whatever you are describing.

Industrial area I presume. It would have been whatever was burning. Check a map for the nearest town to the stench and see what industries were there that might have been producing pollution. Check the news for major fires in that area. If it was a chemical fire, contact the authorities in that area to see if you should get medical attention.
