It's impossible to control your nightmares or what you dream about, but you can try to decrease the risk that you will have one. For example, watching horror movies usually increases your risk of having a nightmare or a sleepless night. Also, I thought I read somewhere that going to bed too late can interupt your sleeping pattern, causing you to not enter the proper sleep cycles. You get your best sleep before midnight... What are your dreams about? Is there an underlying meaning to them? Maybe you feel stressed out, so it is translating into your dreams. Maybe you are worried about a family member, and that contributes to your nightmares. Dreams are usually a collection of things that have happened to you in the past day, or few days. If I am watching Punk'd before I go to bed, chances are I may have a dream about Ashton Kutcher. Or maybe I have a conversation about hurricanes for an hour with a friend, I may dream about them. So like I said, try and figure out why you are having the nightmare (what it means). Then, you can change your habits...that may prevent the nightmare from returning. Good luck!

I don't do the horror movies either, but remember having a battle zone-type dream and wondering why it happened.
Some dreams help us to understand what's going on in our lives, or make us aware of things that were not consciously thinking about. Other dreams make no sense at all and just make us wonder.
I wish I'd thought of what was going on during the days before I had the rare dream. Maybe I was going through a difficult time where issue and concern was getting blown up and gunned down left and right.
If it's not a dream that you're having over and over then maybe you're through the difficult spot. If it happens again, consider what's going on in your life and think of ways to deal with it and see if your dreams change.

You can't really make your dreams or nightmares stop, its your brain working after you slept, sorting out the days events and things that are on your mind, try not to think about it when your going to bed tonight, watch TV or a movie before going to bed, the chances of you having the nightmare again or anytime soon are very small.

I'm answering your question with questions. Do you watch horror movies? Do you dabble in witchcraft, sorcery, secret societies or occults? Do you try to conjure up evil spirits or dead spirits?
To stop them, when you awake immediately speak "Jesus Christ of Nazareth have mercy upon me." Before you go to bed at night read God's word, the Holy Bible. The Book of John in the New Testament is a good book to start with.
Read Ephesians chapter 6 to learn how to wear the whole armor of God to ward off evil. If you haven't accepted Jesus as your Savior ask Him to come into your life and forgive you of your sins and deliver you from the evil dreams. Find a local church with Bible Study and learn what your Creator has to say.

Others have already posted some great suggestions, but how about seeing a psychologist, clergyperson, etc.? There might be something bothering you. I've had a lot of nightmares, insomnia and panic attacks. Therapy worked wonders for me.

There are several common medicines that tend to have side effects. Even things such as alcohol, nicotine and caffeine can affect some people psychologically. You may want to retrace your day...
