It is illegal to own many exotic animals. Many people think that they can control them, especially if they are young, but that cute little baby cougar won't be that way for very long. They are WILD animals, and they can't be trained over one generation. Domestic pets took thousands of years to take the wild from them, and even now there are 'accidents'.
The few who do own exotic pets, legally, have been granted a special permit, and most are zoololgists who KNOW what they're doing. Sorry. You're out of luck.
If you decide to get one illegally, have fun getting yourself killed.

I have an idea- go into the wild and find one- become it's supper now, it will save you a lot of time, money and hassle. The only people who work with them are professional trainer or have grown up with the animal from day one and know how to take care of it. I have seen someone mauled by a tiger that was bottle fed. The keeper was leaning against the fence and the tiger came up and hooked his claws into her.
Also, in most states it is VERY illegal, but hey, people like you keep the chemical immobilization field a money market, and I will have a good paying job tranquilizing "pets" after veterinary school.

Well first off, you have to have a wildlife keeper permit.
Second, tigers and bears and other "cool" animals like that aren't pets. They should only be kept by zoos or animal sancuaries, where they are raised by people that know what they are doing.
Please don't be thinking that getting a tiger, bear, etc. makes you cool.

Well, I have no idea but I'm pretty sure it's gonna you LOTS of money. First you need to build the proper enclosure for a pet like that. You probably will need lots of land. Then, you'll need a permit to keep an exotic animal. The animal itself will probably cost several thousand. Then, there's food. You'll have to find a vet that will administer vaccinations and other medical care, which I'm sure won't be cheap. And good luck finding a vet that will actually come to your house and work with an animal like that.
I think it's a bad idea. Animals like that belong in the wild.

Should Tigers and Lions Be Kept as Pets?
Big cats such as lions and tigers are awe inspiring, beautiful animals. People are often intrigued by keeping big wild cats as pets, but what kind of pets do tigers, lions, bobcats, and other big cats make?
Owners need to remember that even the smaller of the non domestic cats, such as bobcats, servals, and lynx, are not at all like domestic cats. Different species have different temperaments, but all of these cats can exhibit unwanted behavior from urine marking to aggression. Most of these cats will need spacious outdoor cages in order to thrive. It is a huge commitment and responsibility to properly care for smaller wild cats such as bobcats.
The large cats such as lions, tigers, leopards, and cougars are even more problematic. Even if they are not overtly aggressive, their natural tendencies must be remembered. They are predators, and even at play their huge size and strength makes them a threat.
Many people do keep big cats like bobcats, tigers, and lions as pets. Tigers and lions are surprisingly easy and inexpensive to purcfhase as pets. This means anyone can own a large powerful carnivore whether or not they are equipped to properly care for them. Pet tigers have been involved in several fatalities and maulings in the US in recent years (see Animals Centers of Excellence Tiger Facts). However, even more pet tigers and other big cats end up neglected, abused, or given up to sanctuaries when their owners cannot care for them. I am certain that there are owners of big cats who go out of their way to provide appropriate housing and diet and have no problems, but there are countless others who are very misguided in their expectactions and ability to provide the proper care. Case in point: the man in Harlem who raised a pet tiger in his apartment (see first source).
If you're looking for an exotic -looking- animal that still is tame and a good pet, look into getting a Bengal (bred from the Asian Leopard Cat, some wild behaviour, very leopard-like in appearance) or a Toyger (I believe these are off-shoots of Bengals, but I could be wrong. This is a designer breed made to look like tigers).
Take a look at the last and second to last source link. The second to last is an index to exotic pet information. This'll give you an idea of what is and isn't possible. The last is Exotic and Unconventional Pets, and gives you an idea of some cool and not-so-cool pets that are 'different'. For example, skunks make great pets if they are hand-raised and their smell gland is removed so they don't stink everything up.

It is illegal in most states to keep wildlife, including large exotic animals. These laws, like most, are designed to protect people from themselves.
Large cats, bears, etc make terrible pets. They are also a danger to the public and the people they live with.

It's not cool to own a tiger. It's pathetic.
That's why they are called wild animals. They are wild. Now go read or something and do something productive instead of trying to ruin a beautiful animals life.

Why in the world would you want a WILD animal as a pet. All your asking for is major trouble. And on top of that, it is most likely against the law to own a wild animal.

You don't. Wild animals belong in the wild. Wild animals born in captivity belong in an environment as close as possible to their natural one. They are not pets and everytime i see someone owning one it makes me sick to my stomach. Theres a jerk that owns a petstore in a local mall and he has a Ring talied lemur on display everyday to attract customers. It makes me sick. I fought to get him taken to a sanctuary but the most they could do was get it a better cage but the cage still sucks and is too small.

the only way that you can own any kind of a wild animal is to contact the national wildlife agency and apply for a license stating that you have government permission to own a wild animal. then they come out and inspect you home and property to see if you have a fit home for a wild animal
