fred,
they are amazing snakes aren't they, but let me tell you from my experience with gaboons there is no common ground... i had one that was great from the time it was a baby till the time it died... i had a few that were just to agressive to handle and i had to give up to my vet as he had a connection at the dc zoo and i had a few that were jumpy little buggers as babies but calmed down once they got some weight on them.... in all of them and all the other snakes i've handled however i would say their tempermemnt was most like that of a burmese python.. quick as hell and will snap at anything bigger then them as babies but once they got older even though they would still occasionaly snap they always gave warning..... i no longer have them for one reason and one reason only though.. i got bit good by one of them and it was enough for me.. the venom wasn't the worst of it... the 3 inch serated fangs that went through my wrist bone was.. keep in mind i am petite at best at 5'2 105 pounds so my wrist is not big but i imagine they can easily due damage to anyone with fangs their size regardless of how petite they are or not.

i have two one is pretty calm one is not. she shots of her container never tries bitting.

the person that said they got bit by a gaboon and the 3 inch fangs went through the wrist bone, gaboon fangs have been know to get 2 inches 3 inch fangs would be a record by an inch. and saying the venom isnt the worst part ? unless it was a dry bite or very little venom injected i would say the venom is the worst part since they have hemo and neruo toxic venom

i would say that the gaboons handle the same as the rhinos i have both and i dont really see any difference in handling either one, you may get a crazy gaboon that doent like being bothered but that can go for any snakes

Aren't they known for being agressive? I think your nuts for wanting a gaboon....why not a bushmaster while you're at it? Where do you live that you're allowed to keep these guys?
By the way, your wife looks cute draped in snake...kinda reminds me of that old Natasha Kinski photo...remember it?

Here's a link from a guy with some expeience: Gaboons are known to have a good temperament once they get older, but maximum caution must always be taken! They look placid but are waiting for their chance! If anything comes within striking distance (which is large) they will have no second thoughts to having a go at it. Gaboons are very accurate strikers and never miss. Always use handling tools. Never get relaxed around your snake… their sluggish appearance quickly disappears when you see how fast and hard these guys strike! Quite unbelievable!!! Please be careful! They can strike in any direction, even over their back, so handle these guys with care.

I actually have a friend who met the lady that was killed on the show at a reptile expo. He said she didn't seem to be the most mentally stable person. Responsible people don't let their venomous snakes roam around while they clean the cage. I owned a gaboon viper for a few years, and although their venom is extremely toxic, there's really no reason a responsible keeper should ever get bitten by one. The lady on the show was clearly taking unnecessary risks and paid the ultimate price.

If you can handle the snakes you have already mentioned at Gaboon should not be much extra work for you. Just make sure you have anti venom on hand just in case of any accidents. They can generally be cared for just as any other hot species. Although they may appear sluggish they can strike with lightning speed so definitely be careful.
