All monitors (TV and computer) are measured diagonally so the number sounds bigger than measuring width or height. Normal display is 4:3 (width:height), widescreen is 16:9, or 33% wider. You can use this math to determine if any monitor is widescreen or not.

It has to do with the aspect ratio of the picture, regular TV is 4X3 and wide screen is 16X9.
