Some farmer's don't sent their pigs to market, they do it all themselves. Saves money. On a large scale then yeah they send them to a slaughter house.

The pig goes to the market to buy the roast beef he eats later in the rhyme.
And many people use the word market to mean corner store.

yeah, I know what it means, and I'm not a farmer. I'm a country girl granted.
It can mean one of two things
A) you're selling the pig
B) you're selling the pig as pork

"Mother Goose" were nonsense nursery rhymes and had animal characters to amuse babies and toddlers. If Mother Goose lived in the 21st century instead of the 1700s, she would have wrote "This little piggy went to the Mall."
