I personally have and love my Dell. As for specs, that depends on how many pictures you plan on saving. Memory should be a minimum of 256 MB. Todays CPUs will do you well. You can also purchased remanufactured systems from their site, which is the best deal. Hope this helps & happy New Year

I have had great luck with Dell, after going through some amazingly poor service from Gateway. I'm on my third Dell notebook. This is a 700m, which has a 14" screen and a smaller keyboard. I have small hands so I'm fine with this, but you might prefer a larger keyboard. I like the small size of this notebook because I travel with it, and maybe it uses less battery with the smaller screen. Certainly uses less carry-on space. The wireless works great... it finds and uses signal with ease.
They all worked great out of the box. Delivery was prompt and complete. I had a problem with a screen after a month or so, and I reported it. A box arrived in the mail in two days, and a phone call from a tech within an hour or so of that. She came to my home and made the exchange of parts and took the bad part with her to return to Dell. That's the in-home warranty service and I don't know how it could be any better.
Specs are so individual and I found the Dell salesmen to be very, very good at explaining them, and even anticipating needs I don't understand (I'm not too sophisticated).
Only reason I've gone through three of these is my husband needed notebooks for a couple of his employees. If anyone is getting the new one, it's me.
I have no complaints whatsoever about Dell, but plenty of praise.
Look em all over and have fun doing it. The more you look, the more you learn.

It depends on what you will be using this lap top for. If you do allot of business related work - I would recommend a DELL [Less costly]. On the other hand - if your using this lap top for "multimedia" work - APPLE [But a little more $$].
I would also recommend talking to others to whom you know ... and do some research on-line from your desktop (?). Ask some of the sales persons at maybe some of the local computer stores in you community.
The more information to which you have will able you to make a more sound decision and one you will feel more comfortable with.

Well you have pretty much listed the immpossible. You cant get a decent laptop for under 400 bucks that does what you want it to do. Your best bet would be an Eee PC still as those are the cheapest on the market. you could also try a acer i love acer.
