Ok... well I just bought a dwarf hamster, and she's very kind and she doesn't really nip or anything and all that other good stuff. The only problem I have with her is she runs on her wheel ALL night. From about 10 pm to 7 am. I do have another hamster, and he used to do the same thing, except I didn't have to deal with him since he wasn't in my room. Now he's just old and he doesn't care to run so it's not an issue. But here's my question; is it okay to take her wheel out at night if I let her run around on it for a few hours and then put her in her ball so she can run around on the floor? Is it really necessary for her to be running on it for 9 hours straight? If so, then is there any alternative I can try instead of taking her wheel out?

Hamsters are high energy critters. I have one myself. Is it harmful to take the wheel out of a cage at night... Let me ask you this....

If you where a nocturnal creature locked up in a cage... No room to really roam...And you had so much energy you felt like you where going to burst if you don't do something... And your wheel is the only thing to get rid of your energy... Would you like it if your owner took your wheel away...

Problem is simple... If you have a wheel like mine that is metal.. Take vegetable oil to the rim of it where the metal meets it quiets it down a lot.. Or simply put your hamster in another room.

Hamsters do most of their activities in the night because they are nocturnal. But the wheel can be very annoying when you're trying to sleep! I think it's okay to probably take the wheel out at night...as long as you let her have a good run around in her ball before you go to bed. Make sure the hamster's home has lots of chew toys, and tunnels and nesting boxes for her to explore. But don't leave her in the ball for the whole night as she needs access to food and water.

You could always create a hamster-powered night light...

But seriously, hamsters like to run, and hamsters run the most at night. You could look into a quieter wheel, or apply a bit of vegetable oil for a quick fix to a squeaky wheel.

i have a gerbil and all she does is run run run and what i did was get a quieter wheel i perfer a plastinc one and if you dont mind the wheel noise it is just something else then trey taking the wheel out every 2 nights, or try giving it morethings to do then run on the wheel that worked out for me and all i did was save the tiolet rolls and paper towl rolls and put those in her cage and also that made noise of her chewing on them it was a lot quieter than her running on her wheel so good luck with that and i hope everything works out with your hampster!!

Hamsters are nocturnal so that is when they play and get their excise, so taking it out would be unfair to your hamster, what you should try is at night move the cage out into the living room or bathroom at night, that way its not annoying you and the rest of the family.

it's ok to take away her wheel for the night -- you can give her something more quiet to do, like chew, etc. if the wheel is really squeaky, try putting a dab of cooking oil on it to lubricate it. hamsters also like sand baths, so you can just put a little ceramic bowl filled with clean sand in her cage. you can also try putting plastic tubing on her cage for her to climb around. make sure she's not getting all her exercise in her ball -- a hamster will get dehydrated in like 15 minutes in one of those. good luck!

for mine, her wheel was really loud, so I loosened it a little so it wasn't banging against the cage...just make sure you dont loosen it too much. don't want it to get hurt.

I have a walk in closet, so I kept her in there at nights....

my hamster died this morning at the vets tho....I HATE PETSMART. I only had her for 4 days and she was really sick, so don't listen to anything some idiot who works there says....

you can take out its wheel but remember they're nocturnal...they like to be up....

I take Mousey's wheel out at night. No one needs to run around a wheel all night.

I have had this problem so many times! What you need to do is take the metal or plastic rod that the wheel turns around, and rub some skin moisturiser onto it. This stops the wheel rubbing and grinding around the rod!

Let the hamster run but maybe the ball will help reduce this
