Yes, a yard sale is certainly a help in getting organized. I find I need to categorize things, and put things in containers appropriate to the sort of thing it is. Also, if you are storing things in cardboard boxes, label every surface of the box (except I suppose the bottom) with what's inside. You can even paste a detailed inventory on the top if you expect to want just some portion of what's inside.

Organize things according to how often you look for something. And when you do look for something, take note of the FIRST place you look. When you eventually find it, put it back in the first place you looked, because that's where you expected it to be.

I use big plastic totes from wal mart and label them they stack nicley and all the same size vs boxes.
