I would just replace the hole P-trap with plastic. I was a plumber for a long time and if you have trouble removing the old one with a pipe wrench. They make sawzaw blade that is made with a diamond cutting edge. They normally run around 10 dollars and last along time.

A p-trap doesn't have a nipple, but there will be a galvanized pipe that the p-trap leads into, on the way to the main drain. You can crawl under, disconnect the p-trap, and remove the galvanized pipe nipple with a pipe wrench, but be forewarned. It's gonna take one heluva lot of strength to get it loose.

Chances are, the leak is not the fault of the galvanized pipe, but the compression fittings at the base of the overflow. You might need to crawl in while the water is draining, and see just where it's leaking. Tighten it up. If this doesn't work, you might need to replace a seal under one of the nuts.

Jenn, whether it is or is not the p-trap nipple. When galvanized pipe come together for a long time, they rust. Therefore, if you need to loosen two that are rusted together or damaged, get a small torch and heat the one on the outside of the threads and that will expand the distance between the two pipes and they will remove easier from one another.
If your in close quarters, get your spray BLT that you use on your ironing board and keep it handy in close proximity in the event you lite a fire to any thing close to the pipes.
Other suggestions may be valid, but without being there and/or a picture...its hard to direct you in the correct way to remedy your problem.
Hope you get it or email a pic

Do you have access to the area in question? If so I would replace the drain with plastic. There are a few PVC option to choose, go to to Home depot or Lowes for help. If you get none, e-mail me back.
