The term "Jumbo" was a zoo keepers? But the elephant was in London by say 1866. Was purchased in Africa from some Arabs, details not clear, could of already had the name given. It is a common African tribal word.

Jumo died in 1885, sadly in Canada hit by a train.

because of the movie dumbo...the elephant was called that because of his extra jumbo ears..i guess all elephants have jumbo ears and are pretty jumbo themselves.
