to do this without a router you need to connect one laptop to the router, either by a wireless connection or using a ethernet cable (but this laptop will have to have 2 ethernet ports for this configuration to work) and connect a crossover ethernet cable to both laptops ethernet ports.

Then back on the laptop you will have to bridge the wireless and ethernet connection in network connections and enable internet connection sharing in windows.

It would be alot easier if you would just shell out 50.00 for a wirless router so you dont have to be tethered to another laptop or a modem....

Well, yes you can do it with a crossover cable if both computers have NIC cards but if the first computer does not have a second wireless card you cannot do it wirelessly. one wireless card os for the internet and the second one would be to share it with your computer. it is a lot easier to connect to the same wireless source as the first computer connects to. now if i missunderstood your question and the first computer connects to the internet through a cable, yes it is possible to do it wireless. the point is that you need one network card for the internet and another card to share it with your computer. please specify the way it connects to the internet. please email if more help required.

Hey there,

If you have DSL or Cable internet, your best bet is to go out and purchase a Linksys wrt54g or wrt54gs wireless router/firewall. This will allow up to 255 devices on your network at one time.

Do not hassle with the crossover cable or any such thing. It will only give you heartache and frustration.

The instructions are good as long as you follow them WORD for WORD.

You'll need:
1) Broadband Net connection
2) wireless router
3) WiFi cards for BOTH notebooks.

The router should have instructions. Nowdays, it's not hard to get it up & running. Be sure to secure the network using WEP (see the instructions) to keep someone from leeching off your network.
