Like for instance if you get or buy something, they try to out do you by getting the same thing but better. What is up with that?

b/c everyone wants to be the best that is possible. so if u have something they dont have, they have to make them selves feel even better by getting the same thing or better to feel that they arent being left in the dust. they are just insecure with themselves and are trying to be the best by using material objects.
