Get yourself a router (wired is OK, wireless is better) and connect that to your cable modem. Then connect both PC and laptop to the router (this is where having a wireless one really comes in handy). If they're running XP, both computers will automatically recognize the router. Presto--you're up and running.

You need a router and a PC card from Belking make sure it is the same speed. They come in different various sizes. I for myself bought me a Belkin router and a Belkin PC card.
You hock the router on to your PC follow the simple instructions that come with your router package.
Than you hock up the PC card into the PC slot in your Laptop and volla you're ready to go. I just did that a few month ago.

But now I do not need anymore, cause my roomy let's me use her wireless laptop which has a Sprint PC card unlimited internet access for $ 59.99. So if yuw ant to save your self money on purchasing a router, and a PC card, just do that it's easier.

I would purchase a router, available most anywhere. Setup is fairly straightforward. I would stay away from ICS (Internet Connection Sharing-Software based) to many headaches. Plus you will have the option to connect the laptop wired or wireless depending on which type you buy.

you can connect your laptop to your pc by means of a
-crossover wire
-wireless router (don't need to connect directly to pc)
-wired router (don't need to connect directly to pc)
-wireless AP card

if you're using crossover wire then you might want to turn on Internet connection sharing and configure the network accordingly.

Best and easy way is to get a wireless router and make sure you have a wireless enabled laptop. If you don't have a laptop that is wireless enabled then you need to go buy a wireless card for your laptop.
