The toothpaste works--but if you do not rinse well, you can have residue.

I clean mine with window cleaner. Just pour some in a cup, drop the jewelry in and let it sit for 20 minutes or so. Then clean/polish with an old toothbrush, rinse in clear water, and dry with a soft towel. Make sure to dry-that gives it a 2nd polish.

This method works well. Just be careful when cleaning pearls--they cannot handle chemicals.

Soak for 10 minutes in this mixture.1 tsp washing powder for clothing mixed with a cup of water.

Ammonia works wonders. Just let soak for 15 minutes or so and scrub with old toothbrush, rinse and wear.
