not often do i find questions that leave me specchless... actually its to stop landrovers from running into them when dumbasses visit africa to go on a safari. the chevron signs just won't stay stuck to their backsides, so mother nature painted them onto the zebras at birth to give us advanced warning when approaching a zebra crossing...

It's very rare that they are born with stripes. Usually, the native people of the country they are in go out and paint them on when they are a few days old, then have to go back out and paint them once a year . . . . you know, kinda like what we do to skunks, paint horses, and calico cats here.

yes, depending on their environment. zebras usually lay their eggs in the spring, when the grass is at its tallest and it's the shadows on the eggs that cause the striping--the uv radiation causes the unhatched zebra skin to darken in a striped pattern(as the grass shadows are striped). then when they hatch, they retain that pattern throughout their life. if you keep a zebra egg in full shadow until it hatches, the zebra will be all white. conversely, if you keep it in full sun, the zebra will be completely black.

Well, i read somewhere that they were just born white and the black stripes were on later. Maybe you should research that.
