You need to cycle the tank first or the fish will not last long. Here is a good read on cycling.

Many people are suggesting goldfish. DO NOT GET GOLDFISH! They will stunt in such a small tank. IT is very painful for the fish and the organs grow inside the body that does not grow. Results in a long painful death for the fish in 1 of 2 ways. 1)1 or more organs may burst out of the body(although this is rare) 2) Organs grow until the body can not supply energy to them and the fish slowly dies of organ failure.

You can only get 1 fish until your tank goes through the nitrogen cycle. This typically takes 4-6 weeks.

Make sure you get a hardy fish such as a molly, guppy or swordtail for the first fish.

I highly agree with the first response. If you do not cycle the tank, it will kill your fish. You may also want to read about fishless cycling at www.aquahobby.com (under the articles section)

That being said a 5 gallon tank is restrictive.

You could have:
-a single betta with a couple small (NOT albino or bronze) cory catfish like panda cories or pygmy cories.
-another option is to replace the betta with a dwarf gourami
-you could get an african dwarf frog (can go with the betta or gourami if you want)

I would stay away from tetras and danios as a tank this small does not provide enough room for these fish that need to be in schools and need swimming room.

Neon tetra's are a shiny fish, but they only grow to be a around 2". I like the Fancy Tail Guppies their colors are great and they give birth to live babies (You would need a place for the babies to hide or the parents will eat them). Another beautiful Fish is a red tail black shark, they grow to about 3-4" (they are not man eating sharks) Have fun with setting up the aquarium!

Most experts will disagree, but i go by my own ethics. I have a 10 gallon filter in a 5 gal hectagon tank with an awesome little green spotted puffer, he costs $8 and hes the coolest little guy ever. they say its not enought room but that big filter keeps the tank clean and he loves his space and all the krill he can eat.

I don't know if this is national but Petsmart is having a sale. You can get 3 platys and 2 african frogs for $5. That's a good deal.

guppies and a cat fish. you can get just males or just female guppies if you dont want to end up with lots. i would suggest just getting 5-7 fish in such a small tank.
