mayans-- You should see Apocalypto

There are a couple of confusions here. Yes, the Mayans preceded the Aztecs in the valley where Mexico City is now, but they had already started moving further south when the Aztecs arrived. The Aztecs did fight Mayans when they arrived and sought economic and military dominance in the area, but they also heavily fought the Zapotecs and mostly the Toltecs. Many of their gods were borrowed directly from the Toltecs (in a similar way that the Romans borrowed Greek gods).

So, in some ways the Mayan and Aztec people were contemporaries, although in terms of which culture thrived at which time, the Mayan already had a widely spread civilization but were declining and had less power than the Toltecs when the Aztecs arrived.

I hope that helps :)

Supposedly the Mayans were first and then the Aztecs arrived. They fought the Mayans and won, so they built their city which is now Mexico City and the Mayans had to move southeast. That's what most peole tell me.
