I wouldn't worry because you're far from being the only person to feel this way. Even JK Rowling admitted that she meets few fans whose favourite character is Harry.

I don't hate him but I don't particularly like him much either. For one, he's bland because the entire series is set from his point of view so we know everything that goes on in his thoughts. He doesn't have the same air of mystery that every other character possesses.

Secondly, he's not got the best of personalities. He has a real 'woe is me' attitude (there are other people in the series who have miserable lives too but they don't whinge on and on) as if he's the only one who's suffered during Voldemort's reigns. He also has this idea that he can deal with situations better than any of the adults in the Order, leading to him being reckless and arrogant at times. Not to mention, he really hasn't matured much as a person through the six books.

All in all, Harry comes across as a rather self-absorbed, immature brat at times. I often wonder why Ron and Hermione haven't told him to grow up.

I do, and I completely disagree with the above answer. (No offense intended, everyone's entitled to their opinions).

I too am a big Harry Potter fan, and although I don't think Harry's personality is perticularly unique or extremely good...I do think Harry as a person is. Here, it is important to understand what J.K. Rowling was attempting to get across: Harry Potter felt like an average boy in an average life before Hagrid came and brought him to Hogwarts. He learns that something terrible has happened to him, and terrible things continue to happen to him. However, not once does he complain out loud to anyone, nor cries out woe is me. Mind you, I think he should. If my parents were killed trying to save me, and the most powerful wizard (aside from Dumbledore) was out to kill me...and in the end I would have to kill him or be killed by him...I would feel like crying out woe is me. However, Harry does not do this, which is why Harry is such a great character.

J.K. Rowling throughout the series, tries to make the reader understand that Harry has been through traumatic events...worse than any other in the Wizarding World...and yet he doesn't complain and he fights on for 'justice' and to defeat Voldemort. I love Harry Potter as a character, and i hope your opinions don't get in the way of experiencing a wonderful series. Best of wishes!

He's a teenager. Even the best of them tend to be a little like this. I have a teen age boy who is a month and a half younger than Harry. (Who by the way, has been told numerous times that he looks exactly like Harry.) He's very like Harry. In my experience, most teenageers have this "I'm the only person who can possibly know how I feel" and "I'm indestructible" - know-it-all attitude.
Very annoying, but most of them grow out of it by the time they are twenty or so.

What I appreciate is that JK Rowling has made him a bit unlikable in the later books, because he is an obnoxious teenager! She really has portrayed that aspect of his character well in the last two books. On balance, he is a likable character, but he is also an adolescent which means that he has these incredibly whiny and self centered moments as well as immature moments along with moments of intelligence, caring and insight. Harry is growing up and JK Rowling has portrayed that process beautifully.

I really to like Harry as a person. Though I can understand why people don't. Like in book 5. Many ppl didn't like how he acted. I agree that it was alittle different for him but I also found it understandable. What would it be like to never hearing from any of your friends for weeks? And living with ppl who really hated you? Plus the dementor attack? What a sucky summer?

Its hard to say really. On one hand he is a brat who just wants attention and someone to love him and on the other a boy who was ignore and treated badly as a youth and just now trying to prove himself to everyone including himself. Its too hard of a question. I mean we say the better nature of harry when Sirius and dumbledore was around but when it comes to other things i don't think harry knows how to be caring and compassionate like everyone else.

in the first few books, i really liked his character because his adventures weren't so completely based on killing and fighting and people dying constantly. but now its like harry is this really dark character that everyone is a little afraid of. i think that my least favorite book would have to be the fifth one because thats when his world really gets the dark outlook on it, especially those temper tantrums he kept having all through the book. so my answer is really a yes/no kind of thing.

I like Harry as a person immensely. I love his dark, sarcastic humour and his sense of honour. Sure, he can be whiny and selfish, but he's a teenager.

He's not my favorite character either, but give the poor guy a break--I didn't have the best personality when I was an adolescent either (and I tended to have a very "woe is me" attitude--most adolescents do!) :)
