FROM EXPERIENCE: acting school is fine to understand the the certain attributes of acting. The worst thing you can do is take advice from someone else about how to act. The whole secret of acting is being comfortable in a personality that you have achieved if you have to change that or are not confortable, you will struggle, just my two cents.

If you are still in school join the drama club and audition for plays. Join the choir and learn to sing. Dance lesson never hurt and will make you more marketable. Most larger cities have newpapers that tell what auditions are available. It may or may not be paying you anything. Audition for plays, musicals, or commercials. This gives you experience. Just remember there are more actors that have a regular job than there are actors that earn a living completely from acting.

If you are a student I recommend taking an acting course in your high school or college. Also audition for local theatre troupes and Community theatre as well as the school shows. build up experience for your self.... volunteer to help with show you aren't a member of the cast in... just take it one step at a time.

Unless you are wealthy, you should listen to what Robin Williams father said to him when he told him he wanted to be an actor: "Fine, just as long as you have another profession to fall back on, in case it fails --- like plumbing!"
