It usually is a very effective antibiotic if the bacteria is susceptible to this particular antibiotic. Often you are provided a treatment before the sensitivity reports are back from the lab (it takes 3 days). Bactrim is usually well tolerated; it is inexpensive; and most UTI's are well-treated with this medication - here's the rub - but not all. Continue to take it as prescribed for now.

You might try Azo or Uristat which is an over-the-counter analgesic for cystitis and urinary discomfort (It will turn your urine a strange color, so do not be alarmed).

If you develop a fever, nausea, vomiting or present with frank blood in your urine...go to your ER for further evaluation and treatment.

If you are still having symptoms by the time you have completed your Rx, then contact your doctor the last day of the Rx and let him/her know. He/she will probably track down the sensitivity report and will prescribe an alternative (if the bacteria is not susceptible) or perhaps an extension if it is.

I hope this helps. Good luck.

I have had a UTI and taken Bactrim before. Sometimes antibiotics do not start to work until the 3rd or 4th day but make sure you take all of them. Drink plenty of water and cranberry juice. Try to avoid soda pop and alcohol.
