You're going to get what you pay for. You have either broadband, DSL or dialup, depending on what's available in your immediate area. The signal can only run so fast on a telephone line, so dialup will always be limited. DSL is limited to whether it is even available to you. Broadband and cable are my choice, but then to me, the price is worth it.

After reading the answers, I decided to edit my answer, and rebut Oracle. I just caught one of my neighbors hacking my broadband, and he had a choice, get out of my cable signal, or go to jail. My wireless WASN'T unsecured, this a**h*** is hacker enough to find it. It is against the law. My wireless is now set up and he CANNOT get into it again. People who advocate someone else breaking the law need to be put out of business, themselves. Why the h*** should I pay for cable just so a thief can use it? Put your money where your mouth is and pay for it.

The only suggestion I have is that if you live in a metro area, there's a good chance that one of your neighbors has wireless internet, and that it's unrestricted. Have someone bring their wireless capable laptop to you house and see if you get any signals that are strong enough. If so, just get a $20 wireless PCA card for your desktop and you can share some of that bandwidth. Unless you're doing mad downloading, noone would ever know you're there.
The other alternative is to get 2 or 3 neighbors to split the bill with you every month, get a wireless router and they can share your signal.
