The shaft. It not only is behind you but also in front of you and to both sides. In fact, the elevator is inside the shaft which extends to all of the floors of the bldg.

Usually, if you're in an elevator car, there's not really all that much outside. Elevators travel in elevator shafts, so all that's behind you while you're in an elevator is the back wall of the elevator shaft. There's obviously the machinery that pulls the elevator, and probably some pipes and wires too.

i guess you have to look at this in the following: ground floors usually house the electrical and hydralic system for the elevator.
the shaft houses tracks at all 4 sides and the counter weight cables along with the safety systems.
