I currently have AVG Antivirus and Spybot antispyware installed, but for some reason neither will update - either automatically or manually. I have also tried something I found called "CyberDefender", but this keeps bringing up an error message "CyberDefender caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL" and then jams. If someone could tell me how to solve these problems I would be most grateful - thank you!

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

download firefox for free, Just have a try:

CyberDefender is a spyware. I downloaded and installed it about a month ago. At that time I had not install Spybot Search and Destroy. Then I read in Y!Aanswers that it was a spyware. I then removed it. Then two days ago when I scan with SS&D after updating, it was detected again and now I had it quarrantined. I think it just came into SS&D spyware database. That is why it stopped you from updating your SS&D and AVG AV. . I suggest you do a system restore to a date before you installed CyberDefender, create a new restore point and then remove all previous restore points with Disk Cleanup's 'More options' menu.

never heard of cyberdefender but spybot is good, try uninstalling it and reinstalling. AVG is probably the best free one I've used but if you want to pay for an antivirus I am really impressed with kaspersky.

There is also adaware and spywareblaster that you can download from http://www.download.com a-squared from http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/ is good too but is slower to scan than the others. you can also get windows defender from microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

You should only use one antivirus at a time but can use as many antispyware as you need to and I would suggest using them all.

I would also think that an error with kernell.dll was quite serious
