The term "redneck" comes from the south and that we get some of the hottest weather in the US. When it came time to pick the cotton or tend the fields, men, women and children usually where sun burnt on the back of their necks. Hence, southerners were called rednecks!

I can understand how people would label the term as derogatory. Some people see the term as a person with generally negative qualities while some see the term as a person with generally positive qualities. Also it depends on the context in which you use the term. Gretchen Wilson showed the term is a positive light with her son "Redneck Woman" and so did the show "The Dukes of Hazard".

All Witches are Pagans, But not all Pagans are Witches, the Pagan umbrella is very big and includes many religions such as Witches, Druids, Wiccans Etc... and some call them selfs Witches because they are in fact Witches, and whom ever made this respectful term derogatory, is the one you should ask questions to, like Who? Why? When? did I say WHY? :) EDIT: Yes you right Salem was not the only event in history here in South Africa, people get killed almost on a daily basis, after being accused of being Witches or doing Witchcraft but this happen not with white skinned witches just the black skinned ones :( *sad EDIT2: And you know sadly just like Salem none of the actual accused are Witches. EDIT3: racism?? No! its their own black skinned people doing the accusing so no racism there bud. EDIT4: Actually most real Witches that where ever killed was people(Witches) that helped others and the helped people they went and spoke *also sad, but yes you right bud people saw the gap and took it too :(

I guess people imagine a red neck to be in the KKK,and very ignorant.People view red necks as nasty to woman, beer drinkers, fart in public, burp loud and generally very rude. This is the stigma of red necks,I'm sure not all who are red necks are this way.But that is the general consensus to the term.

In some states like South Carolina, and Georgia it refers to being a racist. I found out while at Fort Jackson. I said i was because i like country music and line dancing. The lady was quite upset that i said that until a staff Sergeant explained I was from Texas, and it meant something totally different there.

The term redneck was originally a duragitory term the middle and upper classes had for farmers and others who had to toil in the sun for a living.

I don't think it is derogatory exactly. I think there are different views on what exactly a redneck is, but every self-proclaimed redneck I have ever known never took it any way but positively.

Even in adverse circumstances, I don't think you would rile a redneck up by calling him that. In fact, he probably is in total agreement with you.

"redneck" is interchangeable with "white trash" which is also considred a derogatory term/racia slur. However, it all depends on how that person feels about the term--some ppl may find it non-offensive and identify with being that, and others, who do not identify with that, will find it offensive.

I never heard of a redneck not liking the term redneck. If that were true Jeff Foxworthy would be poor as a redneck.
