Carly simon, HP CEO oversaw the merger a few years back.
Hp handles the freemarket consumers, compaq gets the government contracts.
Hp has more bells and whistles, compaq is more streamlined in it's capabilities.

There isn't much difference between them. HP acquired Compaq a couple of years back. HP is still producing some co-branded desktops and notebooks. It might be possible that after a couple of years the brand Compaq name will disappear all together.

HP had acquired Compaq long ago. But they are retaining both the product lines. HP Pavillion notebooks are for home use, while HP-Compaq (especially nx series) are for business use. Compaq pressario are entry level notebooks.
Business use means it would be having better build quality, more battery life, more upgrade options, more security features like fingerprint scanner etc. (Comparable with DELL Lattitude.)
But pavillion models would have more entertainment options like bright screen, media center os, quick play buttons, remote control etc. Comparable with DELL Inspiron (but HP has got better build quality).
Compaq pressario models are entry level laptops aimed for low end users and students.
HP Compaq = Business series, better build quality, more security features, less flashy colors (all black)
HP Pavillion = Consumer line PCs
Compaq Presario = Same as HP, with a few minor differences (see first post in this thread)

Both are same company now ie HP but....generally hp is suited for professionals but compaq is suited for student......
I am student and i am using compaq for last 2 years and i did't face any problem yet....

hp laptops are more for commercial use , wheres compaq is for home use.. its a slightly lower version than hp
hp is more expensive
hp has more features and can be put to more uses
hp looks better
