According to IMDB, Johnny Cash was given the name "J.R." because his parents Ray Cash and Carrie Cash couldn't agree on a name, only on initials. He adopted "John R. Cash" when he joined the Air Force, which did not accept initials. So, it looks like the R does not stand for anything. He does not have a middle name, only a middle initial.

In the movie "Walk The Line", they called him J.R. when he was young... so I think it's J. R. Cash... R. probably stands for Reallycool.

long time ago in a documentary I heard June call him,(like your mom would if you were in trouble) John Randall . mighta jus' been somethin' between the two of them though

I don't know his middle name but when I went to memphis in May, I held one of his guitars and went to the house where he lived on the lake - that was pretty cool!!!

...there´s no middle name, his name was just J.R., they changed it to "John" (I think when he joined the army), you should ask Wikipedia, theres much written about him......
