The Electoral College, like Unions, has lost its original intent. The "College" was originally established to give each state equal representation, regardless of population. That of course was when there were just a few states and territories. However over time the population masses moved around as did the number of overall eligible voters. The "College" members for each state are selected, which in its own right could be tainted and are supposed to cast their votes based on the will of the state residents they represent. We all know how politicos are though.

At any rate, nowadays the general vote is what should count especially given that Clinton and Bush did not win the majority but instead the majority of electoral votes. This number can be determined long before the overall vote is even counted. Discouraging voters in some places.

I would keep the Electoral College as it is. Our country was founded on the principal of checks and balances--executive, legislative, judicial each having powers over the other two. That is also why we have a House and Senate--to protect the interests of the smaller states against the larger states and vice versa. If we had only direct popular vote, NY and California would control every election. And sadly, I don't know if we could have an accurate count on a direct popular vote--there have been so many disputes in vote counts in the past.

The electoral college does have a good purpose in letting all the states participate in the election process withhout the larger states taking too much for granted. Yes the candidates strongly run for the larger states because of the greater electoral prize but if we could get rid of the "winner take all" aspect of the process and use it within a congressional district counting as 1 electoral vote it would give the smaller states a better chance of counting more importantly in the electoral process.

I think it needs to be done away with. I believe in the power of popular vote rather than my state casting my vote for me. So my vote is that it needs to go. The idea behind it is it thinks common people are do dumb to place their own vote.
