I think she is a gifted writer, although her books can be pretty depressing. I enjoyed The Rag Nymph the most. I've read probably five of her books. Can you recommend the least depressing ones to me? Thanks!

The Mary Ann series...

The Mary Ann stories

* A Grand Man 1954
* The Lord and Mary Ann 1956
* The Devil and Mary Ann 1958
* Love and Mary Ann 1961
* Life and Mary Ann 1962
* Marriage and Mary Ann 1964
* Mary Ann's Angels 1965
* Mary Ann and Bill 1967

In Mary Ann's Angels...her toddler son has been listening very carefully to the talk of the adults around him. At one point an adult says in reference to another who has been getting away with hurting others..."Every dog has his day"...the little boy chimes in "Yeah...and some bitches get two afternoons"...

I read that chapter as a teenager...and it is rare now that I laugh as I did then...

that moment has stayed with me...for over three decades...and Catherine's characters occupy the same space...

try the Mary Ann series...you may find much more to laugh along with her characters...than there is to despair...

Peace...and Happy New Year...
