unlike inanimate objects ((not living)) living creatures produce a physical response to indicate an injury has taken place. bruising (contusion) from an injury is caused by tears in the small blood vessels under the skin. the central point of the injury will likely hv a bump if impact was hard becuz some fluid has collected to protect the area,, act as a cushion til it heals.

Its a collection of blood, called a hematoma, that pools under the skin. With any bruising, there is blood under the skin. But this usually only happens when it's a bad bruise (more blood = a lump). I had one that lasted for a few months once. Try warm compresses, and it will go away faster.

The rushing of blood to the area causes swelling - the bump.

When tissue is damaged it swells up as a result of it. You have white blood cells rushing to the area to kill any infection that may be present. It's a normal reaction.

The "bump" is caused by the swelling of tissue, usually muscular tissue. It will eventually go away, and may go away more quickly by applying cold compresses to reduce the swelling.
