As far as I know pregnant women can be around dead bodies. Just not while they are being embalmed. I work at a funeral home and worked until 4 days before my son was born. I even assisted in the prep work. I was only sent out of the room when the actual embalming was done. Fermaldahyde is extremely dnagerous to anyone, especially a develpoing fetus, But if there is no fluid leaking and all the incisions are closed, then a dead body is perfectly harmless.

First the idea that pregnant woman should not be around dead bodies is an old wives tale. It was said that it would mark the baby.
As for autopsies - it is preformed to determine the cause of death and it is possible that the woman would be exposed to a disease that could harm the baby she is carrying. Normally gloves, gown and masks including a face shield is worn to protect against this.

They can be, they just have to use caution. If the person died of an illness that can be transmitted, then she could get it. I was around dead bodies when I was pregnant, and no harm done. Sometimes, it's because pregnant women have a tougher time with stuff like that. If you are going to be around them, make sure you wear face mask, 2 sets of gloves, and a gown if possible. This will insure that nothing will happen.

Pure superstition ! There are no bad voodoo dead people rays put there that will harm the baby. A very close family friend was killed in the war when I was 12 wks pregnant. I went to his funeral and my baby is fine.

Corpses can carry disease but I have never heard of a pregnant woman not allowed around dead bodies. If a corpse has a disease that can be caught by a pregnant woman, it would be equally as harmful to someone that isn't.

I think that was back in the days when a dead body wasn't embalmed. Not unless they're allergic to formaldehyde?

Never heard that. Posibly due to the fact formaldehyde is utilized as an embalming fluid.
