It isn't a matter of being all-around knowledgeable (although that certainly helps), but in utilizing all the resources available in a responsible and organized fashion. When you don't understand something or are stuck with a question, don't get distracted and take a break. Instead, find the answer by looking it up, asking friends, asking teachers, and even asking other students you don't know.

Organize your notes, create a shorthand that u can use and read easily (even if someone else can't), develop a writing style that you know definitely works for your teachers, and do whatever else it takes to make sure you can get the grade.

Sorry, but in today's world, homework isn't about being smart or "getting it" as much as it is about satisfying superiors and expressing an ideology which will definitely appeal to those around you.
