Love the Odyssey! It is about a quest to return home. Maybe it is because my family and I have to travel lots that I thought it was so good. See there was a giant battle far from the home of the main character in the Odyssey. After the battle, he wanted to return home to the place he loved best and to his beautiful wife. BUT the gods had other ideas. They made his life and the life of the men who were with him a living nightmare. That is the fun of the Odyssey. Seeing all the horrors he had to go through to get back home. The poem also deals with the problems that his wife had while he was gone. Lots of men came to try to get her to marry them because they thought that Odysseus must be dead. He had been gone for so long. But his wife is smarter than the men who want to marry her. Also, only his dog recognizes poor old Odysseus when he finally makes it home after years and years. For a more detailed account of this see:

It is dull and I read it two years ago ... so I had to look back at my book notes. It's about the struggle against the Gods that Odysseus encounters while trying to get home to his family through out the 10 year war (or was it 7? but it's a war). He goes through temptations, down times, near death and then has to win his family back by his own conventions. If you need to get the basis of it check out Sparknotes for The Odyssey of Homer. It's odd, Homer wrote it and named it partly after himself. Oh well, hope that helped.
Sourced by Honors English 10 and a paper back version of The Odyssey of Homer.

Read the abridged short version first.
Open your mind and be a little bit more creative and imaginative. If you develop capacity for telling lies, that'd be a plus. Accept that gods in plural, ghosts, spirits and paranormal phantasmagorias are out there and all out to taunt and haunt your firm religious beliefs!
Do not approach Homer with cynical disdain.
Do not look at the map and trace the distance between Troy and Ithaca and then reason that that such short distance could not take ten years. For in the final analysis, you might be right that there was no actual historical bruising ten-year Trojan war. It might after all been merely, a battle of words (nouns, verbs, adjectives adverbs etc) skillfully connected and crafted by Homer.
Heed these simple truths and I am sure you'll tremendously enjoy the Odyssey. . . .page after page.

The book itself may seem boring but the Odyssey is about the journey of our life who we are while walking in the ocean of life...literally.

I read the Odyssey when I was in College...and read it again and again. It is anything but boring! Talk about adventure! It is one of the best stories about adventure, love, life, and belief in one's self and the Gods. Timeless.
