to UNO surprise, someone in the Nixon whitehouse paid G Gordon Liddy, and some of his flunkies to break into the DNC HQ at the Watergate Hotel and collect pictures of a Nixon cheating on his wife (wich the dems nevered used)and the Dem's main strategies for the up coming election. it ended up becoming a keystone cops comedy, because they were all morons, and their flashlights were seen by security guards and they were busted. the first thing the reps did was to have the security guard fired for doing his job.

When the burglars tried to break in again to adjust some bugs they had planted they were caught. Nixon at first denied any knowledge of the goings on. Later it became clear he did at least know about it if he did not order it himself. An insider who was nicknamed "Deepthroat" by the reporters he talked to gave the incriminating evidence to the press. Ironically enough Nixon won the election in a huge landslide.
