Okay... an obscure favorite (I did like a lot of the mainstream stuff in the 80s).

Stingray... the 1985 series starring Nick Mancuso.

It was about a mysterious man known as Stingray (he drove a 65 black corvette stingray) that you could contact if you had a problem and needed help. Instead of wanting money, the client he helped would owe him a favor. At some point in the future, he would call for the favor to be redeemed, and no matter what it was, the client must do it. Most of the time the favors were called in to help Ray help other clients.

His identity was a mystery: background checks, fingerprints, license checks, etc would lead to different people, government agencies, and he would never reveal his true name. The assumption was that he was somehow affiliated with the CIA. He was very talented- he would go undercover in various identities and study to pass himself off in high level professions.

I also loved the show because of the music. They did an original song for almost every episode, and they had instrumental sequences where they would time video cuts to the music. Post and Carpenter did the theme music, and Walter Murphy did most of the scoring.

It was a mid season replacement series, and only lasted a year and a half. It's scheduled to be released on DVD in Canada next year (the company also is releasing Canadian DVDs for Hardcastle & McCormick and Riptide if you remember those series) so I hope that it finally gets out on dvd and I can retire my old vhs tapes.

Some I care not to admit, but of those I do:

The Equalizer
Quantum Leap
The Wonder Years
Beauty and the Beast
Newhart
Murphy Brown
Designing Women
Rosanne
Square Pegs ( as short lived as it was)

Not terribly obscure, and some crossed over into the 90's, ahh well. Suffice it to say, I probably watched too much television during the entire era.

Not exactly timeless, but AUTOMAN (with Desi Arnaz Jr) was memorable. Give all your points to that guy who remembered Stingray, though --- he really blew the dust off that one!
