I personally think it's a cute name and I'll bet that the people who have shared with you that they don't like it because of the conotations (stripper, seductress, etc) are all over 30. I am a high school teacher and I'll bet none of my students would make these associations.

While I understand your concern to have the name you pick for a child be validated by others, I think there are only two things you need to consider when thinking of names for a baby. First, are you going to like this name forever or is it a passing fancy? My grandmother told me to holler out the name from the back door as if I was calling the child in for dinner. It really works!! If you do it a few times a day for several days, you'll find there are names you thought you liked that just aren't as good when you start using them practically.

Secondly, think about what can other kids do to the name (kids can be cruel), Again, I don't think most kids these days would make those connections with Lolita.

I'm in my 40's, my mother was going to name me Lolita, or Loeta, her name is Oleta. She ended up naming me Karen.

I thank her for that. Lolita does sound like a stripper to me and I'm glad that I didn't have to go through my life with that name.

Lolita is a horrible name and is going to make people think of the Book, also the Long Island Lolita (Amy Fisher) and yeah, a stripper. Be nicer and do not do that to your child. And please don't say your familiar with the book by Vladimir Nabokov, it is considered great literature even though it is about a 15 year old girl who is basically a seducer, thus the name Lolita is synonymous with um, young girls and easy sex. So, oooohhhh, no.

Unfortunately there has been too many films with Lolita's which is suggestive of the sex industry and Lola- L O L A lola, la, la, la, la, lola--- who could ever forget that song?

Did you consider Lila? or Lilianna? They are soft, feminine names and are derivatives from lily.

Best of luck to you and your little girl- I know you will find a pretty name for her and Happy New Year!

oh please. i wish people would stop saying "that name sounds like a strippers name" there are emma'a and ashley's who are strippers out there. so get over it people. anyways, lolita i think is a very pretty name. i don't think a name makes a person i think how they are raised makes the person.

Lola does not sound like a stripper. Many normal, pretty girls names are Lola. I totally think you should name a girl Lola.

I like the name, but what's more important is if you like the name. Theres lots of name association because of a book or some one you liked or didn't like going on here, don't give your child some common name like Jennifer or Jessica because when your child gos to school and they have a common name they feel like less of an individual because they may have 6 Jessica's or 4 Jennifer's in a class with them. If you like the name go for it. For the record it doesn't sound like a stripper name to me. Good luck.

Lolita sounds like the movie where old guys fight to screw a girl emerging from adolecence.

Lola does sounds like a transvestite.

Try Lori, Lulu, or other variants

The term lolita has come to be used to refer to an adolescent girl considered to be very seductive, especially one younger than the age of consent.
