It was that goofy Charlie Rangel trying to prove some kind of point. He was unsuccessful as he was ridiculed by both sides.

I do believe it is a strategy: (assuming support for the war could get any lower) it says to people, if we don't get out asap, we're going to be forced to reinstate the draft (there aren't enough troops). It's a logical conclusion in some sense. We don't have enough troops, we never did, we're losing, Iraq gets more violent every month (Dec was the most violent ever), and now Bush says more troops. From where? We've already called up the viet nam vets!

The Dems want to look tough on national defense to hopefully get back the Whitehouse. They can do that by being tough on illegal immigration, but they won't.

Just because there is a draft doesn't mean that politicians' children will go to the military. There are always exemptions. I believe it should be mandatory for all kids to spend at least two years in the military to build discipline and character. When I have a choice, I hire people with military experience.

The democrats have been united in their opposition to the war and Bush. But they are not united in what should be done. Some of the Democrats support a draft but not all do.

I don't think any Democrats have supported reinstating the draft. Yes, they suggested more troops, but how does "we need more troops" turn into "we need to reinstate the draft?"

Just a silly political ploy.
Charlie Rangal D-NY introduced the bill a few times and when the Repubs pushed it to a vote Rangal would not even vote yes on the bill he introduced.
A waste of time introduced by a waste of a politician!

They changed nothing, they simply waited til the election was over before they notified us of their real agenda. I predicted this more than 2 years ago. You didn't really think that a change of majority would bring honesty and integrity to Washington D.C. did you?

I think the idea of reinstating the draft is a way of projecting the idea that this is our war and our country and unless we fight together then we fall apart. If this is a fight that nobody wants to fight themselves then why should others do it for them.

I believe the reason I heard was that the republicans wouldn't be so quick to go to war if their sons and daughters had as much of a chance of having to go fight it as the others.
