Most health visitors advise at approximately 4 months to start weaning starting with one meal a day and progressing on to 3 meals a day, without taking away the milk as babies still need it until they are at least a year old. I didn't stop giving all 4 of my kids milk until they were about 2 but every child is different. Your friend might feel that her baby is hungrier and may need the extra food, children also need more when they move around more or they have been ill....

In geberal from formula and/or breatsmilk not until they are a year. You can add solids (starting with thin rice cereal) as early as 4-6 month but they still need formula/breastmilk in addition for the first year.

If you mean weaning from the breast then there is no rule to this. If you wean from the breast before the child is a year then you need to substitute with formula.
The recommended time of breastfeeding is 1 year... to get all the health benefits from it for mom and baby.

The current Department of Health advice is 6 months, however some babies are weaned earlier on the advice of a health visitor or doctor. I started weaning my son at 5 months after talking to my HV.

Depends on the individual baby, if she was showing signs of being ready for weaning then thats fine. How old is your friend's little girl.

The best age to wean a child at is 6 months, any earlier than that and it can cause lifelong problems such as obesity, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) to name just a few. Health visitors normally suggest that you wait that long and only wean them earlier if they are having problems sleeping through the night and they had before. Did you friend try her baby on the hungrier baby milk first as that may be a better alternative rather than weaning at such an early age

I began weaning my daughter at 4 months. She has always been a hungry baby. At 8 weeks she was on SMA White. At 14 weeks she was having crushed rusks in her milk as she was always hungry (on the advice of my mother). at 17 weeks I started with baby porridge and gradually introduced lunches ( veggie and fruit purees ) and then dinner ( fish, meat pureed with veggies ). At all stages she still had her baby milk and was eating three meals a day at 5 months. She dropped to three 7 oz bottles of milk a day and then at 7 months began having a 9 oz bottle, at morning and bedtime. She's 27 months now and still has a cup of C&G toddler milk before bed.

Every child is different and I've heard the recommendation is 6 months before weaning now. I would probably try baby porridge or baby rice at around 4 months and see how you go. Your baby will let you know if he/she's not ready.

What do you mean by weaning? Taking the bottle away completely? Or taking milk and formula away? Or to stop breast feeding?

Babies need milk or formula in their diet at the bulk of their liquid and food intake until theyre about a year old.

by 8 months a baby can eat a lot of solid foods, and maybe only a few bottles a day, but they still HAVE to have milk or formula.

By the toddler years its still important to give them milk, they ned calcium.

Weaning from the best and onto a bottle can happen at any time.

Your friend is doing the right thing. You can start to wean a baby slowly from three months (12 weeks). You just have to make sure they are still having their bottles as normal, and when the baby gets older you can start to decrease the amount of bottles she is having. It sounds like your friend is doing a good job and knows what she is doing, so leave her to it.

From giving birth the first time in 98 to the 3rd time in 01 the recommended age went from 3 months to 6 months and I started solids between 3-4 months for all of them , simply because they were too hungry for just the bottle. Every child is different and a midwife once told me that she went by weight rahter than age.

Babies need formula or breast milk as thier main source of nutrition for the first nine months. Although you can begin supplementing with solids at six months they won't play an important role until about nine months when they can start eating more variety. Formula or breastmilk should continue until 12 months and then switch to whole milk or, if breast feeding you can continue to breast feed until age two or beyond. Always ask a doctor about what foods and when because that depends on your child's family history of allergies and other things.

my daughter started eating tiny amounds of baby rice at about 14 weeks as she wasnt satisified with just milk and would guzzle as much as she could and then bring a lot back up.
I was told a small amound of something plain like baby rice once a day will be fine but not to over do it.
doc suggest that starting weening properly at 16 weeks is fine but it depends on the baby if they wake during the night etc when they never used to then it suggests that it is time for some solids.
