I don't think too many are afraid of the person they see in the mirror. I think they are afraid that the self they know themselves to be IN THEIR mind is stupid and not good enough.

unless you are a complete dumbass, what others who love you think of you is usually kinder and more accurate than what you think of you. Live in that and not in your head.

What it means to trust yourself: you have made enough good decisions that support you in life, and forgiven yourself for the bad ones - which is the hardest to do. Know that you can know what to do, if you want to.

It has to do with confidence and not being afraid of making mistakes.

Could you cross the street and buy a newspaper? -If so, you are confident
Could you go across town and work for a newspaper? - If so, you have more confidence
Could you to to another city and be a valued employee at a newspaper? - If so you have confidence and also a reputation to others.
Could you travel across the nation and find compelling stories for the paper? - If so, you are confident and a valuable asset to others
Could you travel the world and lead the newspaper? - If so, you are confident and a role model for others.
Would you buy multiple newspapers? _ if so, they you are rich too.

Each requires a step and a bit of experience. You can attain any level you wish and quit when you wish....that takes a level of confidence also.

I was in kindergarten once, now I am very successful and happy, overcoming many obstacles along the way. You can be too, it is up to you.

It has nothing to do with your economic status, your family, your education, your race or your sex...those are merely excuses to fail.

I think that it is kind of like saying, I can trust myself without the having the fear of what I might do or say. Truly having trust in yourself means that you can depend on yourself to make the right decisions for you no matter what, without having doubt or fear.

that feeling comes by having a good track record with yourself... if you are someone who constantly lets her self down - being late with payments, not calling people back, not getting enough sleep, overeating, stuff like that, you might not have much trust in your self... I separate the word yourself/myself intentionally because it helps me to stay in control of my self... I couldn't count on my self to stay in charge and make sure I did what I needed to so I didn't trust myself... I would constantly muck things up - jobs, relationships, friendships, my credit, my education... my track record was a disaster... you can look in the mirror and think that you can trust that person when that person doesn't get you into trouble... when you can count on that person to stay on top of things that matter... when you look in the mirror and can say to yourself 'when the going gets tough, I want that person on my side'... that's a good way even to think if that person is trust worthy (again - two words)... is that person worthy of my trust? would you want you around in a crisis situation? and if you can trust that person, you wouldn't be in fear of them, eh? again, that fear is caused by history... wherever you go, you take you with you... so if your history with yourself is one of disappointment, you would be fearful of taking that person with you

not that you asked but since you asked... the way to gain your own trust is to tackle some issues that have caused you to let yourself down in the past... you don't need to take on anything huge at first... the feeling of mastering/conquering even the littlest item will offer you a rush of successful feelings...that feeling for me is the best high in the world!... it's addictive in the best kind of way... ok, I tackled that - now what else can I challenge my self with? :)

new habits take 21-30 days to take root so don't go giving up if you don't see results immediately... positive self talk helps lots, affirmations... I CAN get to work on time... I CAN be a good friend...

mostly though, don't do to yourself what you wouldn't want others to do to you... treat yourself with the same respect and hold yourself to the same standards that you do the folks you admire

I think it ultimately means: Follow your dreams and don't let others telling you they're unrealistic/stupid/eccentric, etc... There are all grand things we would like to achieve, deep down inside (Write a book, become an actor, live on a desert island, see the world, find a cure for cancer, etc...). Somewhere along the line, most of us give up on these things as social and economic realities begin to dawn on us. But I don't think you should let go of these things, you might need to calibrate your energies to your life, but abdicating on doing anything that truly interests you is a one way ticket to a miserable life.
In other words, of course reality will have her say, but if you've always wanted to write a book, it's important you find some free time to pursue that goal somewhere in your day. I like a saying that goes: You can't do everything you want, but you can do anything you want.
(Don't remember who said that...)

trusting yourself means that you do not afraid of public opinion. you rely on your abilities and you think in a positive manner. you try to improve yourself by overcoming obstacles such as criticism.
