I am thinking of getting one when I travel on the roadbut i am confused. I have my desktop at home so it would coinside with that one.

Not much difference, both portable computers. Notebooks tend to be a bit smaller than laptops, but not always.

The one and the same.... Just two different names for the same device...

You got a desktop computer which means that it is not portable and tends to stay at your desk when you leave... hence the name desktop computer...

Then you got a laptop or notebook... This device is meant to be portable so that you can take notes anywhere (hence notebook) and a lot of people use it on their laps (hence laptop)....
